What happens if a payment fails?

KB-054 | Applies to: All plans | Last reviewed: October 27, 2026 | Version 1.0

If your card expired or your bank declined a charge, this article explains what you'll see in AffirmReady and how to fix it.

What you'll see

  • A notice at the top of every page: "Your last payment did not go through."
  • Your account becomes read-only. You can look at everything, but changes are paused until the payment is resolved.
  • The Billing page shows the status Payment past due.

What still works

  • Everyone on your team can still sign in and view your self-assessment, notes, evidence register, and policies.
  • An Owner can still export your data from the Billing page.
  • An Owner can still reset a team member's authenticator app.

How to fix it

Only an Owner can update the payment method.

  1. Select Billing in the menu.
  2. Click Open the billing portal.
  3. Add a new payment method or update your card.

After you update it, Stripe tries the payment again. Once the payment goes through, the notice goes away and you can make changes again. If you're not an Owner, ask your company's Owner to update the payment method.

Common reasons a payment fails

  • The card expired or was replaced with a new number.
  • The bank declined the charge, for example because of a spending limit or a fraud check.
  • The billing address or ZIP code doesn't match the card.

If the payment isn't resolved

Stripe retries the payment, and if it still isn't resolved, your subscription may be suspended or canceled. See KB-025. If your subscription ends, your records stay read-only and an Owner can export them for 30 days. See KB-056.

Never email card details

Never send card numbers or bank details by email, including to support@affirmready.com. Always update payment details in the billing portal.
